Sustainable, timeless, ethical: discover by artisans' bedding sets

By Bombinate

Partners in business and life, Lennart and Asma never anticipated that their quest for the perfect linen bedding would be on the cards when returning from the Middle East, where they'd been working for some years, before settling down in Europe. On a Christmas holiday trip to Brussels with their young family, Lennart and Asma fell in love with the country and its people, the cosiness and uniqueness of its landscapes, and of course its linen. And here is where the idea to found premium bedding brand by artisans was born.

Tired of big brands and the unpredictable quality of mass-produced products, the couple started looking for soft, sustainable, and sleep-worthy bedding and stumbled upon Belgian flax, which inspired them to create their own brand. They set out to combine their love for design, quality and sustainability with the beauty of Belgian flax – a unique material to produce cosy linen. Aiming to offer the finest handmade, long life linen pieces, by artisans craft and design each item by hand with careful attention to detail.

We asked Lennart and Asma to share more about what they look for in quality pieces, and their plans for by artisans.

What does craftsmanship mean to you?

L: For us, craftsmanship is the dedication to create something beautiful without compromising on quality. The ability to craft a timeless piece, which fits seamlessly in your life and lasts for generations. When Asma and I started by artisans, we made it our mission to put craftsmanship and quality first and foremost, and we've never regretted it.

How long does it take to create a by artisan bedding set?

A: So we put a lot of effort into creating each individual piece. From sketching the initial model to cutting the fabric and sewing the hems, to packaging and shipping, every single step is done by hand by a team member in our Belgian atelier. I'd say to ensure that each bedding set is really perfect we need at least four hours.

Why did you choose linen over cotton?

L: Sustainability has been a huge part of by artisans from day one. We wanted a material that was sustainable, yet durable. Linen actually has a longer lifespan than cotton – it simply lasts longer. Also, linen goods get better and softer with each wash, unlike cotton which becomes more threadbare as the fibres are weakened. And lastly, linen needs fewer resources in production, making it truly more sustainable and eco-friendly. In the end, it was an easy choice for us!

A: Not only that but we also chose linen for its incredible properties. Linen is antibacterial, hypoallergenic and has thermoregulatory properties – promising a good night’s sleep, for winter or summer alike.

What is your proudest achievement?

A: When setting up by artisans, the research took so much time we started a real quest to find the perfect fabric for our bedding, one that would be durable yet soft, warm in the winter and cool in the summer. We ended up developing our own linen blend, the softest and most durable fabric specially woven for us by a local manufacturer. Having a fabric no one else in the market offers is an incredible accomplishment for me.

What is next for by artisan?

L: More colours, more colours and more colours! At the moment we offer a selected range of bedding sets in curated colours, from the classic white and light grey to the more stylish cinnamon and dusty blue nuances. However, now we're ready to really explore a more extensive palette and add new, exciting styles to our growing catalogue.

What music do you listen to in the workshop?

A: There is a bit of everything for everyone, from the Stones and Creedence Clearwater Revival, to Velvet Underground, Van Morrison and Diana Ross. But, as soon as Lennart puts on his Steve Winwood songs nobody wants to work anymore, they just want to leave...
